What does pore space look like?

The geometry of pore space in granular media controls many properties of engineering interest, but the complexity of naturally occuring media (soils, sandstones, etc) has long bedeviled efforts to relate macroscopic properties to microstructure. Test your intuition with the following simple example.

Applications to contaminant transport

Recently we discovered a new mode of subsurface transport. My colleague Prof. Clint Dawson has summarized some of the findings.
