Berea Sandstone Fluid Displacement Experiment

Residual fluid blobs are visualized for a well studied set of 3D X-ray images of fluid displacement in Berea core.

We consider only interior blobs of 1000 voxels (0.00012 mm^3) or larger from a subvolume of 256^3 Berea image with voxel length of 4.93 microns. More details can be found in the paper to be presented at Computational Methods in Water Resources conference in Copenhagen, Denmark,  June 19-22, 2006.

Two rotational views of a typical water blob at water residual conditions swr. The water-grain surface is shown in gray and the water-oil meniscus is shown in green.
Two rotational views of a typical oil blob at oil residual conditions sor. The oil-grain contact surface is shown in gray and the oil-water meniscus is shown in red.

Images are organized by experiment runs (residual fluid conditions) and are protected by password. Please email 'masha at ices dot utexas dot edu' to obtain the password.

Experiments (follow links for appropriate galleries)
  1. swr (primary drainage, water blobs at residual water)
  2. sor  (primary imbibition, oil blobs at residual oil)
  3. gel (placement and gelation of water-based gel)**
  4. gelswr (drainage after placement of water-based gel)**
  5. gelsor (imbibition after placement of water-based gel)**

**In X-ray images, gel and water are indistinguishable!
