Leszek F. Demkowicz

Associate Professor

The University of Texas at Austin Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics

Dr. Leszek Demkowicz is a Full Professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics. Since 1993, he has served as an Asssistant Director of Texas Institute for Computational and Applied Mathematics (TICAM) at The University of Texas at Austin. He graduated cum laudae from Cracow University of Technology in 1976 with M.S. in Engineering Mechanics and from Jagiellonian University in Cracow in 1978 with M.S. in Theoretical Mathematics. He received a Ph.D.in Engineering in 1982 from The Cracow University of Technology, Poland, and completed his habilitation thesis at the same institution in 1987. In years 1990-1993 he was the head of Section of Applied Mathematics and Director of Computer Center of the University. Since 1980 he has collaborated with Prof. J. Tinsley Oden, Director of TICAM (former TICOM, Texas Institute for Computational Mechanics) on several projects, frequently visiting Austin. In 1993 he accepted the position at the University of Texas and moved permanently to Texas. Dr. Demkowicz was one of the founding members of the Polish Association for Computational Mechanics and served as its first president in 1991-1993. He edited two books, has authored and co-authored two books and over 100 technical papers and has received a number of technical awards in Poland and US. He serves on the editorial board of three international journals. His area of expertize focuses on hp-adaptive finite element methods with applications to solid and fluid mechanics and wave propagation problems, including electromagnetics, acoustics and elastodynamics.
