Engineering Mechanics and from Jagiellonian University in Cracow in
1978 with M.S. in Theoretical Mathematics. He received a Ph.D.in
Engineering in 1982 from The Cracow University of Technology, Poland,
and completed his habilitation thesis at the same institution in 1987.
In years 1990-1993 he was the head of Section of Applied Mathematics
and Director of Computer Center of the University. Since 1980 he has
collaborated with Prof. J. Tinsley Oden, Director of TICAM (former
TICOM, Texas Institute for Computational Mechanics) on several
projects, frequently visiting Austin. In 1993 he accepted the position
at the University of Texas and moved permanently to Texas. Dr.
Demkowicz was one of the founding members of the Polish Association for
Computational Mechanics and served as its first president in 1991-1993.
He edited two books, has authored and co-authored two books and over
100 technical papers and has received a number of technical awards in
Poland and US. He serves on the editorial board of three international
journals. His area of expertize focuses on hp-adaptive finite element
methods with applications to solid and fluid mechanics and wave
propagation problems, including electromagnetics, acoustics and
elastodynamics.
